Principles of sustainable design: low-voltage systems

In these times, sustainability has become an important deciding factor when it comes to our everyday choices. When it comes to our power systems, we have sustainability in the equation. This is where low-voltage systems come in.

Low-voltage power systems

True to its name, low-voltage power systems are integrated power systems that make use of the AC or DC current. The AC current can range from anywhere below 49 volts while the DC current is less than 120 volts, a stark comparison to a normal voltage system that has AC ranges between 50 - 1000 volts and DC ranges of 120 - 1500 volts.

Applications of low-voltage system designs

These low voltage systems can be found anywhere from commercial buildings, offices, schools, hospitals. Any application that does not require a constant high power can be run on these systems.

Fire alarms

One of the most common applications of a low voltage power system, fire alarms have an important task of alerting the occupants of any premise when there is any hazard such as a fire or smoke. With a low voltage fire alarm system, you can save on the energy used and at the same time keep your constituents safe.

Security monitoring systems

While security cameras may run 24/7, they actually do not waste a lot of energy. They can get by fine with a low voltage system — allowing building owners to ensure there is always a watchful eye in their premises.

Similarly, in a hospital setting, patients can be monitored for their safety, letting doctors and nurses know if anything is wrong. This allows information to be easily sent within the system, keeping medical professionals up-to-date.

Communications

Similarly and oftentimes linked with fire alarms, building communications systems are also crucial to any establishment and are used for announcements vital to the safety of building occupants. These do not require a lot of energy to be able to transit the necessary information needed by the occupants of the property.

Why you need a low voltage system

Firstly, it is impossible to ignore its sustainability. Due to its design, it consumes less power, easing the reliance on grid power. This is also tied to the cost-benefit of having a low voltage system as it would mean move savings and less costs on your electricity bills.

With any system, there is always a risk of an electric shock or fire due to the power used or the property’s electricity requirement. But low voltage systems are exempt from this due to their smaller power consumption, making it safer for everyone.

There is also the convenience tied to having the low voltage system controlled from one master location. This lets users easily shut a system down when needed in a centralized location.

Low voltage system designs are not only sustainable, but have numerous benefits to any building owner. Established in 2005, USCADD specializes in CAD drafting services of fire alarm systems and other extra-low voltage systems or auxiliary systems such as mass notification, public address systems, CCTV, nurse call, access control, and intrusion system. Let USCADD help you build a low voltage system design that can ensure the safety and security of your office location or personal property.
